Use the same contributions, return and retirement spending for both simplified models so the comparison isolates the assumed tax mechanics.
REFLECTIVE FIRE · LEVEL 3
Compare a simplified Netherlands and Belgium cash-out path, then use the differences to ask better questions about tax, timing and the life you actually want.
A SIMPLIFIED CROSS-BORDER MODEL
Use annual euros. This is a planning illustration, not a tax calculation or a relocation recommendation.
Netherlands scenario: This tool models the proposed actual-return regime intended for 2028. The lower house has approved it, but the upper-house process is not complete; current law differs.
Omitted tax: This scenario may cross Belgium's €1 million securities-account threshold. The model does not calculate that account-level annual tax. Open official details ↗
PORTFOLIO WHEN RETIREMENT STARTS
€2.00MBelgium model: €2.00M; Netherlands model: €2.00M. Both use the same contributions, a 7.0% nominal-return assumption and 2.0% average inflation; the Netherlands annual-return tax starts the divergence during accumulation, while retirement sales and realised-gain tax add another difference.TWO TAX TIMELINES

MODEL ASSUMPTIONS: Netherlands: this side uses the proposed 2028 actual-return regime. The lower house has approved it, but the upper house still has to complete its process; the model is not current Dutch law. Belgium: the 10% financial-asset capital-gains regime applies to in-scope gains realised from 2026, but this illustration omits loss offsets, special participation rules, historical basis rules and carried allowances. It also omits the Belgian annual securities-account tax, currently 0.30% for qualifying accounts averaging more than €1 million, plus residence tests, pensions, dividends, withholding, property, exit and treaty rules. Confirm both countries with qualified local advisers before acting.

HOW TO READ THIS
This tool makes the article’s tax-timing idea visible. It deliberately leaves out many real-world facts, so it is useful for discussion and not for filing, trading or moving. Cross-border residency and holding-specific tax advice require a qualified adviser in both countries.
NETHERLANDS BELGIUM FIRE TAX CALCULATOR EXPLAINED
Two countries can produce different portfolio paths even with the same investments and spending because annual taxation, realised gains and transaction rules apply at different times.
Use the same contributions, return and retirement spending for both simplified models so the comparison isolates the assumed tax mechanics.
Compare assets at retirement, ending value and cumulative modelled tax. The difference is a prompt for professional questions, not a personal tax calculation.
Use the model before a residency discussion, then verify asset type, account, treaty, family and exit-tax rules with qualified advisers in both countries.
COMMON QUESTIONS
No. Personal residency, assets, income, account structure and changing laws can reverse a simplified comparison.
No. Tax is only one factor, and the model omits many legal and personal details required for a relocation decision.
